Parliamentarian and champion of women’s leadership to join the Social Progress Imperative board

The Social Progress Imperative is proud to announce that Silvana Koch-Mehrin, President and founder of the Women Political Leaders Global Forum (WPL), is joining the Board of Directors in February 2019.

WPL is an independent, non-partisan and not-for-profit foundation dedicated to increasing the number and influence of women in political leadership. As a former Vice-President of the European Parliament (2009-2011) and a former Member of the European Parliament (2004-2014), Silvana served in the committees on budget, on trade and on gender equality. In addition to her work for WPL, Silvana serves on the board of the UN Foundation’s Council of Women World Leaders, the network of female Presidents and Prime Ministers. She is a regular speaker at institutions such as the UN, OECD, World Bank and other international fora. Silvana is a Young Global Leader Alumna of the World Economic Forum.

Brizio Biondi-Morra, Chair of the Board of Directors, said, “Silvana’s experience with the European Parliament and as a global leader in addressing gender inequities in political participation give her unique insights into policymaking at the highest levels. We are honored to welcome her to the Social Progress Imperative Board.”

“The world desperately needs leadership to take a new path to social progress and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Silvana’s role in driving for greater representation of women in leadership circles and extensive experience as a parliamentarian will be invaluable for the Social Progress Imperative as we continue to scale our work in Europe and globally,” said Michael Green, CEO of the Social Progress Imperative.

“The Social Progress Index is an essential tool for all decision-makers – and policymakers in particular – who need to understand and act on the issues that really matter in people’s lives. I look forward to working with my new colleagues to drive wider adoption of the index and help leaders create smarter, more responsive policies,” Silvana said.

She will be joined on the Social Progress Imperative Board by José Viñals, Group Chairman at Standard Chartered PLC, who will also begin his new role in February. Read more about Viñals’ appointment to the board here
